Unanimous Planning Approvals for Esalen Institute's South Coast Staff Housing

On February 11th, 2020 the Big Sur LUAC (Land Use Advisory Committee) reviewed and made a unanimous recommendation to the Monterey County Planning Commission, which one month later on March 11th gave the project their unanimous approval as well, on a motion made by Martha Diehl, the Commissioner representing the coast region.

South Coast Staff Housing will feature a mix of sleeping rooms, studios, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom homes.  In spite of its steep site, most units will be located along an accessible path of travel, and adaptable for universal access.  All but a few sleeping rooms and studios will have their own entrance from grade, and all feature views of the Pacific Ocean from the sleeping and living rooms as well as outdoor porches or balconies.

The project is all-electric and will be zero net energy, with rooftop photovoltaic arrays generating enough electricity to exceed the sites energy use on an annually averaged basis.  We are pleased this modular housing project is one step closer to being realized.
