Arkin Tilt is an award-winning firm specializing in energy and resource efficient design.
We integrate sustainable efforts into our practice by riding bicycles, reducing waste in the office, and supporting local businesses. With electric and biodiesel cars and solar electricity, we work to keep the office's carbon footprint small.
Community
Our office has a long history of assisting worthy ventures with reduced or free services, or in trade for future payment or services. These include the Berkeley EcoHouse (a UC-Berkeley design/build project), the Dario Meniketti Public Information Kiosk (a Albany Community Foundation design/ build projct), the Biofuel Oasis Cooperative, and others.
Several projects in our office came through the ‘1% for Architecture’ program created by Public Architecture, which encourages architects to provide roughly 1% of their billable earnings in pro bono services to nonprofit organizations. Groups that ATA has collaborated with include We Care Services, Vida Verde, and the Urban Creeks Council.
Our staff members serve on civic bodies, including the Albany Planning & Zoning Commission (David Arkin) and the Berkeley Historic Preservation Board (Tom Beil). Architects bring a unique and valuable perspective to the public dialogue, and we encourage members of our team to engage in this way.
Anni and David are among the co-founders of the California Straw Building Association (CASBA). Anni has been engaged in CASBA’s re-write of their Detail Guide, and David is currently the organization’s Director. He has also been the captain of Team CASBA, our Climate Ride bicycling team that has raised over $10,000, and awareness of the role straw construction can play in sequestering carbon in our buildings.
