The Boreal Wilderness Lodge is located in the heart of the Wrangell/St.
Elias National Park in Southcentral Alaska. The client’s intent
was to create a unique, attractive, state-of-the-art alternative
energy facility for guests who will be exploring the surrounding
park. Their goals include informing and educating guests about the
benefits of energy efficiency and conservation, alternative energy,
straw-bale construction and recycled materials.
A large wing housing the Living/Dining area
and support space was added to the existing log-faced cabin, angled
to the south for maximum solar exposure and to take full advantage
of the spectacular view of the Nizina River and the park beyond.
The addition—designed with straw-bale walls and floors and
high clerestory windows—is comfortable throughout the May
to September season—wood-stove heating will be necessary only
in the extreme cold winter months.
