This extensive phased remodel and addition
to a ranch-style home on the eastern edge of Napa Valley curves
dramatically up towards the southern sky and views of nearby Mt.
George while opening up and connecting to the surrounding landscape.
The curved roof building sections—working around and amongst
existing trees—repeat on different levels, wrapping a series
of outdoor spaces and culminating in a remote studio workspace near
the creek at the bottom of the property.
The view between the pieces shifts, refocusing
the distant views and levels of privacy. The simple, almost Japanese
aesthetic is balanced by a rich but subtle material palette of PISE
coated straw-bale, stained concrete, stained wood siding, and hand-peeled
cedar columns.
The high curved roofs feature a radiant barrier
beneath a ventilated cavity for protection against high summer daytime
temperatures. Both the renovated and added spaces are carefully
oriented and shaded—with substantial overhangs and light shelves—for
optimum passive solar heating and cooling. |
