The design of the new Green Education Center Classroom is firmly rooted in the existing Habitat site, integrating indoor and outdoor classrooms into the garden. Site strategies emanate from the garden: the living roof expands the bounds of the Habitat up onto the building, and trellises and a living wall shade the building at appropriate times, as well as transform the feel of the building as the seasons change. In addition, the design takes advantage of the flow of wind on the site, both for energy generation, natural ventilation and as a teaching tool. Site walls and planted screens serve to deflect the wind and create comfortable outdoor teaching spaces.
The Education Center classroom will support the Habitat's mission of community and donor outreach. The spaces are carefully laid out to accommodate tours or demonstrations while classes are in session, as well as large community or fundraising events. The Center acts as a teaching tool, showcasing many sustainable technologies. It will have dual use as a cooking classroom and science building, and serve as a research and energy-monitoring center.
The project promises to advance the state of the art in healthy, integrated teaching environments as well as portable and modular classroom construction, not only for Carmel Middle School but for the entire District, the Community, schools throughout California, and beyond. |
